This church is prayer-conditioned!
This church is prayer-conditioned!

Oh, the pun-ishment this church metes out!

I’ve seen this sign a few places in the south. It’s popular in the summer when the heat is oppressive and air-conditioning is a necessity. This church, though, is prayer-conditioned. It is salved (and saved) by the power of prayer and the grace of God. Your house should be prayer-conditioned too, I suppose.

Are you risen in Christ or damned in sin? - John 3:16
Are you risen in Christ or damned in sin? - John 3:16

I suppose those are the only two options, right? We’re all born into sin, according to the Christian teachings, so that means we must be saved to avoid being damned.

This is one of those billboard godvertisements, screaming out at you from the highway, not tied to any nearby church. The artwork is fun, too. Is it salvation or LSD? Or maybe it’s the Lawrence Welk show.

And whosoever was not

Andwhosoeverwasnot

Ok — this is is just plain juvenile. But I liked this sign purely for the snot. I was stopped trying to read this one and someone else said “who so ever is snot?”

Salvation is not a Get Out of Hell Free card

Salvation is not a Get Out of Hell Free card
Salvation is not a Get Out of Hell Free card

Hey look! It’s another GOOHF reference!

This one reminds us that simply because we are saved does not mean we have a license to sin. I suppose forgiveness has its limits. And Christ has already paid for our sins with his life on the cross. Who are we to let him have died in vain, right? We should be sinning more, see? Otherwise he overpaid!

But God doesn’t see it that way. No, we should continue to strive to be righteous and live our lives as Jesus would have. Wanton sinning because we know God will forgive us is an abuse of God’s love. He won’t take too kindly to that.

But God has a sense of humor, I think. So he probably won’t mind if you play a little joke with a Get Out of Hell Free card of your own. I use them as a quick rejoinder for holier-than-thous, and as a lighthearted reminder of what’s important when someone is having a bad day.

What do you use yours for?

Christ forgives you — even for that!

Christ forgives you -- even for that!
Christ forgives you — even for that!

Have you sinned? Haven’t we all sinned? Christ forgives us, you know. Every one of us, for every sin, no matter how big.

When you hear about Christ’s love and forgiveness, your mind may begin to recount the sins for which you are most ashamed. Think of the worst one. What is the most sinful thing you have ever done? What deed makes you feel most ashamed of all? (more…)
