God uses setbacks to move us forward
God uses setbacks to move us forward

Necessity is the mother of invention, they say. Success is motivated by failure, sometimes unintentionally. From our perspective things which seem disastrous in the moment are merely a distant memory later or a humorous part of a bigger story.

“Now” is so much more important to us than “last year”. No matter what unplanned catastrophes struck in the past, somehow we managed to live our lives and grow better in spite of it all. Setbacks in the “now” are really impeti for us to take a new direction in the future. Going down the wrong path? God may give you a setback.

It’s difficult to see the advantage of the setback when you stand so close to it. It’s only when we get far, far away from it that we can see how it changed our lives. Hopefully you can find the good in your new route. Remember that you’re not the pilot, you’re the co-pilot. Learn to appreciate the setbacks for what they are.

I spent the last five months house-shopping. I actually found my dream house in the first month, and the last four months have been spent negotiating with the bankruptcy court trustee who is selling it. (It’s very complicated.) We’re so excited about this house! We have the key to the front door already, I’ve had the power, water and gas turned on, we’ve had it inspected, I repaired the leaking water heater already. We have consulted with kitchen designers, picked out marble for the countertops, had the house measured for new carpet. Only one thing prevents us from moving in: (more…)

God asks for progress, not perfection

God asks for progress, not perfection
God asks for progress, not perfection

Perfectionists (like me) have trouble completing things because we know “it’s never good enough anyway, so why go on?” We struggle to see past our problem and aim towards completion anyway. God appreciates the effort more than the end result. This sign couches that sentiment in the words every perfectionist can appreciate: “Make progress” is more important than “Be God-like”. After all, nobody’s perfect, right?

I wonder if Attention Deficit Disorder is really a perfectionist’s problem…?

Marquee bonus: I love that the word “perfection” has an upside-down N. On another church I would think it was done on purpose, but this one is always making this kind of mistake. :-)

A lot of kneeling will keep you in good standing

Ah, another pray on words… So punny.

Have you prayed today?
