If you do the do’s, you don’t have time to do the dont’s

I love this photo. The old man in the picture was just putting up the last letters of this sign as we drove past. By the time I turned around and parked in to get this shot, he had finished and was slumping away. It looks like he didn’t enjoy putting the sign together, huh? Hard work for an old man. I suppose it’s a labor of love.

That aside, the message here is pretty clear. Do the “do’s” — the things that are on the “always DO this” list. And don’t do the “don’t’s” — the things that are on the “DON’T ever do this” list. We all do some of the don’ts from time to time. We know we shouldn’t, but we do for some reason. This sign reminds us that it’s easier somehow not to do the bad things if we are busy in the first place doing all the good things. When we neglect the good list to work on the bad — well, that’s bad, see? So focus on the good list and the bad list will go away.

Simple, huh? Poetic, even.
