What is love? Read John 3:16
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Now, that’s love! God loves the world enough to give His only child to save it. That’s some serious love, right there.
This is one of the only bible passages I know by number. Around here there are bumper stickers that read, simply, “John 3:16″. It’s designed to make you curious, if you don’t already know the passage. It’s designed to remind you of God’s love, if you do.
And it’s ubiquitous. People hold up signs with “John 3:16″ on them at football games. People wear it on t-shirts. I’ve even seen it spray-painted on an overpass. It sort of reminds me of this old joke.
Bob, a professional comedian, invites his neighbor, Larry, to the annual Comedians’ Convention. At dinner there’s an open mic and everyone gets up to tell their favorite jokes. Larry is excited and can’t wait to hear this top-quality show. But he’s confused when the first comedian gets up on stage and says “27!” and the crowd laughs appreciatively. Later he says “262?” and the crowd roars with laughter.
Larry asks, “What’s so funny?”
Bob, between laughs, explains that all the pros know all the jokes already, so it’s just easier to call them out by number instead of telling the whole joke. He says, “you can try it. Just get up there and say a few numbers.”
Larry’s turn comes up and he takes the stage. The audience is still chortling from the previous comedian. Larry smiles nervously and says to the microphone, “19!” The audience stares back blankly. His heart is pounding as he tries another one: “92!” Someone in the audience boos. Larry leaves the stage and goes back to his table.
“Bob, what happened? Weren’t those jokes funny?”
Bob says, “No, it wasn’t the jokes; they were funny.”
Larry asks, “Then what went wrong?”
Bob shrugs and says, “Look, Larry. Some people can tell a joke, and some people can’t. It’s all in your delivery!”
