When you run out of sick days and call in dead, who will answer?

Michael sent this one to me and I love it! He asks (and I’m paraphrasing here), “Huh?”

What happens when you run out of sick days at work and wake up sick? Who will answer when you call, and how will you explain the situation? Will it be the caring, forgiving manager or the Stalinistic secretary?

The sign compares life to a job, allegorically. All our days are numbered, and we don’t know where they will end. When you run out of sick days in life, you’re dead. The way this is tied together in so few words is poetic. I wish I had the capability to turn a phrase so well. (Clearly, I do not.)

So, when you run out of sick days in life and wake up dead, where will you wake up? And who will answer you when you call out “where am I?” Will it be God? Or someone less forgiving?

[Editor’s note: should one capitalize the indeterminate pronoun “Who” when it is might or might not indicate the God of Abraham?]

When you run out of sick days and call in dead, who will answer?
