You’re never too bad to come in, or too good to stay out

You’re never too bad to come in, or too good to stay out

Here’s a fine sign. It’s simple and to the point. It turns on a phrase, it says what it means and it gets in your head. This is one of those signs that you’ll think about again later in the day.

It reaches all levels of faithful. Those who are ashamed to enter the church or feel they would be unwelcome hear the message that they are welcome here. Not only that but they are required here. They must attend services.

Meanwhile, those who think their faith is strong enough that they don’t need to attend church regularly get the other message: “Not so fast, buster.” The sign tells them that they too are required here. They must attend services.

The preacher gets his way: both groups are compelled to attend service. And he also had some fun with the clever saying, and that probably attracted the third group: those people without a guilty conscience or church avoidance but who just attend occasionally. If you’re going to write Godverts, this is the way to do it.
